Vladimir Nabakov--novelist, "at daybreak" on Morskaya (now Gercen or Nertzen) Street, St. Petersburg, Russia: 59N55.9, 30E19.0. The most famous Russian emigré novelist, Nabokov was also a critic, teacher, inventor of chess problems, and entomologist, having several new species of butterfly to his credit. He left St. Petersburg in November 1917; left the Crimea, never to re-enter the Russian empire, in March 1919; his father was shot in Berlin by Russian rightists on 28th March 1922; came to America in May 1940; published his notorious Lolita in 1965; retired to the Palace Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1961; died there in the Summer of 1977. The following passage from Nabokov's autobiography is a typical example of calendrical confusion: "…we lagged twelve days behind the rest of the civil-ized world in the nineteenth century, and thirteen in the beginning of the twentieth. By the Old Style I was born on April 10, at daybreak, in the last year of the last century, and that was…April 22 in, say Germany; but since all my birthdays were celebrated, with dimini-shing pomp, in the twentieth century, everybody, includ-ing myself, upon being shifted by revolution and expat-riation from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian, used to add thirteen, instead of twelve days to the 10th of April. The error is serious. What is to be done? I find "April 23" under "birth date" in my most recent pass-port…" We suggest a birth time of 01:59 UT and an Ascendant on the cusp of Aries. This is early, but at 60º North latitude it puts the Sun a scant 3.5º below the horizon, well inside the twi-light belt. Moon-Venus-Saturn-Neptune grand cross in mutable signs; Sun-Mars-Jupiter T-cross in fixed signs. Source for time: Vladimir Nabokov, Speak, Memory. New York: Putnam1966. Page 13.
